Workshop Description

This workshop is an exploration to be free with paint and colour and explore without fear of mistakes; ‘mistakes’ are just learning opportunities!

Participants will bring and use their preferred medium. The exercises will help participants push boundaries with their art into more abstract shapes using forms they are already comfortable with.

I will be using acrylics for demonstrating exercises and will bring oil and watercolour artworks as examples and to discuss colour palette in the various mediums. Using brushwork and colour, I will demonstrate how to mix colours to get depth of space and pop vibrant highlights. And also: how to recover from ‘mistakes’, use layers, and enjoy the process!

Materials List

Please bring a previous painting or images of your work; this will be used as the main resource for the shapes and perhaps colours that you will use in the abstract expressionism exercises.

1) 3 pieces of Primed watercolour paper, board, or canvas (or unprimed watercolour paper if using watercolours for exercises) (Minimum Size of 9 x 12” ) and 1 larger support for the final exercise painting to music.

2) oil /acrylic or watercolour paint.  If using oils, please no varnish, turpentine or mineral spirits, just linseed or walnut oil.  I will provide Murphy’s Oil Soap for cleanup, or you can bring brush cleaning soap.

Alizarin Crimson (red)

Ultramarine Blue (primary)

Prussian Blue

Cadmium Yellow Med. (primary)

6) brushes (I suggest small, medium and large in round head and flat head)
