Jenny Panda

Painter (acrylics, mixed media)

Artist Statement

Although mostly enjoying acrylics, I love to experiment with ideas and an endless variety of media.
My art is organic, flowing, full of life and possibilities.
During my 34 years of teaching, I constantly worked to encourage spontaneity and motivate creativity in children in England (Birmingham & Hertfordshire) and here in Canada (Oakville & Milton). Now that I have retired from teaching, I am able to concentrate more fully on my own interests: art, literature and poetry.
I still enjoy teaching art to individuals and small groups.
Delighting in art all my life, especially as a student in the 60s and 70s, I have happily concentrated for over 20 years since retirement on my own artwork.
My work is mostly acrylic paintings; however I also use ink, watercolours and any media at hand. My subjects vary from realistic scenes and pictures to a visual exploration of patterns and shapes.
I am fascinated by people and enjoy creating portraits. These I do from life or from photographs. I have had great success working with old snapshots taken many years ago.
I enjoy printmaking, especially gel prints and monotypes using natural materials. I design quite popular greeting cards and art work using dried flowers and foliage.
My experiments in artwork occasionally involve soft sculpture, puppets, applique and quilting. Collage pictures are also an interest of mine, using all kinds of assorted paraphernalia. Overall, I love to experiment with new ideas and varied media.
My artwork and books can be seen at different times and in various places around Milton; in Knox, Milton; the Holcim Gallery; the Legion; and each year during the Studio Tour at Waldies’ Blacksmiths’ Shop.

I enjoy writing and illustrating children’s novels and poetry. Occasionally I visit area schools to inspire, motivate and share my illustrations and stories. For a few years I have written articles for the Milton Villager Magazine which is a well-illustrated publication and an attractive, informative monthly look at events, people and places in Milton, Ontario.
