"I got some valuable ‘take aways’, had lots of time to paint, met other painters, and got to chat with them and see their work. Those are the reasons I go to workshops. All those things enrich my art and my life." (Carolyn Hassard, January 2024 Workshop)
There will be an Art Workshop every month until the end of June, with specific details for each one found in the listing below. All Workshops will be held on a Sunday, from 10 am to 3 pm, in The Tim Horton Studio at FirstOntario Arts Centre Milton, at 1010 Main Street East.

PAST EVENT January Workshop: Int. Watercolour, with Linda Ross Gallagher
January 14th: Intermediate Watercolour Workshop, with Linda Ross Gallagher
Linda Ross Gallagher Headshot Linda Ross Gallagher Artist Bio
Date: Sunday, January 14, 2024
Time: 10 am to 3 pm
Where: Tim Horton Studio, FirstOntario Arts Centre Milton
Fee: Members: $100; Non-Members: $120
Workshop Description:
“Watercolour” is comprised of colour, carried by water! How can we keep the luminosity?
A Landscape will be our vehicle to explore:
· analysing the subject and finding solutions to determine our approach;
· looking into design,
· value studies,
· colour mixing, and
· relationships
A main goal is to take advantage of the luminosity of watercolour through technique and colour choices and to become even more familiar and confident with how water behaves in carrying the pigment across the surface.
As the instructor, I will have an image for the class to work on, but if you have a burning desire to work from one of your own photos, bring it along and we can have a look at it. The size of the class will determine how specific we can be with individual photos.
Materials List:
1) Arches 140lb cold press paper, 1/4 or ½ sheet (11”x15” or 15”x22”):
· If you are more experienced or brave, larger is better;
· If you are relatively new to watercolour, the quarter sheet size will be easier to control;
· Michaels has a disappointing selection of watercolour supplies; DeSerres in Oakville has very limited full size sheets of watercolour paper; Wyndham Art Supply in Guelph is usually well stocked in sheet paper and great paint, but be prepared to park on a side street and walk a couple of blocks due to road work (mail order might make sense);
· Watercolour blocks are more expensive;
· Make sure that your paper is 100% cotton. Other papers can give disappointing results.
· Have extra paper on hand for colour testing and exercises.
2) A Sturdy Board on which to support and stretch your watercolour paper:
· Roughly sanded Masonite, soft plywood, or gatorboard;
· 16”x20” for ¼ sheet, or 18”x24” for ½ sheet;
· Water-activated gummed paper tape for stretching the paper, available at DeSerres, Wyndham Art Supplies or Amazon. Heavier tape for large paper is recommended;
· It is best to stretch your paper the day before, but a demo will be made at the beginning of class, so you may prefer to wait.
3) Brushes:
· A very wide flat wash brush 1.5” or 2”;
· Small, medium, and large round brushes (sizes vary with manufacturer), that hold a lot of water (of course Sable is the traditional high quality brush that holds water and has a nice spring to it, but very pricey);
· Cotman by Winsor & Newton is a reasonable choice;
· HJ Needlepoint #8 is a great solution for fine lines, since it also holds a lot of water, but is not essential.
4) A Palette with large areas for mixing colours and wells for holding up to 18 colours:
· I prefer a palette that allows me to arrange the paint in a circle, as in the colour wheel, with the colours arranged in the same order as they would appear on the colour wheel.
5) Paints: (artist grade will give you richer colour)
· Recommended brands: Holbein, Daniel Smith, Winsor & Newton;
· We will be using a limited palette as our foundation: “split primary”, or warm and cool primaries;
· 2 yellows (choose from): aureolin, or lemon and new gamboge, or isoindolinone (!!!) yellow (easier to say if you break it down into “iso-indo-linone yellow”;
· 2 reds (choose from): Permanent Rose and Scarlet, or a Pyrrole Red that is warm;
· 2 blues: Ultramarine Blue and Pthalo Blue (green shade);
· 2 lighter blues: Cobalt Blue and Cerulean Blue;
· For making beautiful darks add Pthalo Green, Alizarin Crimson and Burnt Sienna;
· Include any of your favourite colours, but these are not necessary.

Date: Sunday, February 11, 2024
Time: 10 am to 3 pm
Where: Tim Horton Studio, FirstOntario Arts Centre Milton
Fee: Members: $100; Non-Members: $120
Workshop Description:
Join Barbara as she guides you through a beautiful garden scene from one of her many inspirations. You will start the day and your paintings by discussing the composition and then work on the painting as a whole, moving from larger shapes to smaller shapes, and towards as much or as little detail as you would like. Barbara emphasizes shape and value as the building blocks of painting, with colour being the playful aspect. She will touch on colour theory and answer as many questions as she can. The participants will start at least one painting - with lots of demos - but bring a second canvas or board just in case you get inspired to start a second one, or even bring something else that you are working on!
Materials List:
First, please feel free to bring whatever supplies that you have … as this is just my list
Important!! No solvents are permitted - Oil painters please use a solvent free painting medium, such as Gamblin Solvent Free Gel or linseed oil, if desired.
1) Paints: Water Soluble or Traditional Oils (either are fine), OR Acrylics, your favourite brand
· Titanium White ( perhaps a larger size just for white )
· Cerulean Blue
· Ultramarine Blue (any variety, French, light, dark … all are fine)
· Sap Green and/or Olive Green
· Yellow Ochre
· Burnt Sienna
· Alizarin Crimson or Rose Madder
· Dioxazine Purple
· Raw Umber
Optional Colours
· Cadmium Red, Orange or Yellow (if you like brighter colours)
· Indigo is a favourite of mine but not necessary
(My palette is pretty subdued)
2) Brushes: bristle or synthetic brushes meant for oil/acrylic
· I love to use Flat bristle brushes - sizes 4, 6 and 8
· optional sizes would be a 2 or a 10
3) Palette Knife if you have one
· My favourite is a DeSerres Brand #2006
4) Canvases: (squares are my favourite)
· Either stretch canvas or canvas boards (both are fine)
· Sizes such as 12 x 12, 14 x 14, or 16 x16
5) Other Supplies:
· Disposable palette sheets to mix your paints on
· Paper towels or old rags
· A plastic container for water, if needed
· Pencil
· Disposable gloves (if you wish to paint with them on)
· Table top or stand easel for ease of painting
· Table cover for studio tables
TIPS:
· Feel free to bring a notebook if you wish!
· I find a box in the back of your car that fits your canvas sizes is handy for getting a wet painting home.
· And sometimes I just wrap my brushes in a rag, put them in a bag and clean them with soap and water when I get home. Just shape and leave them to dry.
· With colour choices … please don’t worry … if you have other blues or greens, we can work with whatever you have … my priorities for painting are shape, value, and then colour …
· I also bring a variety of colours for sharing ... I find colour to be a very personal thing.
